The parks, the schools, and the honest trade-offs.
People think I sell houses, but I actually help families pick the town they’ll remember their kids growing up in. So when someone asks me about raising a family in Longmont, they’re not getting a market report from me. They’re getting my own life, because I was born and raised here and I’m doing the same thing with my own kids now, in the same town, on the same trails. It’s pretty cool to share childhood memories with my own children.

What raising a family in Longmont actually looks like on a Tuesday
The thing that makes this town work for families is how little effort a good afternoon takes. The St. Vrain Greenway runs right through the middle of Longmont, so getting the kids outside means walking out the door instead of loading everyone into the car for forty-five minutes. In the summer we’re at Union Reservoir, where you can swim, paddleboard, and stay until the light goes. Sandstone Ranch and Roosevelt Park handle the in-between days, the rec center covers the winter, and the Longmont Museum gives you somewhere to be when it’s snowing sideways in March.
Main Street matters more than people expect, too. It’s mom-and-pop restaurants rather than the same chains you find in every suburb, and it’s where the parades, the farmers market, and the summer festivals happen, so your kids grow up recognizing faces downtown.
The location earns its keep for a family as well. Longmont is central to everything, so a weekday soccer practice in Erie and a Saturday drive up to the mountains or over to Eldora both fit into the same week without wrecking it.
The school question every parent asks me first
Longmont sits in the St. Vrain Valley School District, and it’s a real strength of this town — Longmont High, Skyline, Silver Creek, and Niwot, plus the innovation and STEM programs that draw kids from across the district. My advice as a parent and as a Realtor is the same: check the boundary before you fall in love with a house. Two homes a few blocks apart can feed different schools here, open enrollment exists but isn’t a guarantee, and school assignment is the one detail that reshapes your entire week without announcing itself.
The part of Longmont nobody puts in the brochure
I’d rather you hear the tradeoffs from me now than discover them in month three. Main Street and Ken Pratt get busy at rush hour, and if you’re coming from a smaller town you’ll notice.
We don’t have Boulder’s restaurant density, so once in a while a specific craving means a drive. And anything near the St. Vrain needs a floodplain check, because the 2013 flood reshaped a lot of this town, and floodplain status still affects insurance and lending.
None of that has moved my family an inch. Longmont gives you a real downtown, water in the summer, mountains forty minutes away, and homes at nearly every price point, which means a family can start here, move up here, and stay. That combination is rare on the Front Range, and it’s why so many of my clients end up choosing this town over the bigger name down the road.
Come see whether this is your town
Tell me what you want your family’s Saturday to look like — bikes to the park, a boat hooked up by nine, or breakfast you can walk to — and I’ll tell you which part of Longmont fits it and which one doesn’t. I know this town like the back of my hand, and I care where your family lands.
